I've had two high points with a low inbetween. I'd call it a good 24 hours.
So I'll start off from yesterday's concert. You already know all the background so I'll skip ahead to getting dressed. There's a Facebook page for the kids in the program, and a girl that I know posted that she was looking for someone to go with. I responded that I'd love to go with her. We settled on meeting in the lobby at 6:45. I was finishing my makeup and putting on my last smears of red lipstick when I got a message from her. She wanted to meet at 6:30 so we could take pictures before going into the concert. I told her that I wasn't finished getting dressed yet, but I'd hurry it up a bit and message her when I was finished. I put on my brown sweater dress that seems to hug all the wrong curves but makes me look like an adult, my cute brown boots, brown tights, and my rain coat because it makes me look put together. I finished the look with my glasses and my black travel clutch. I messaged Iza that I was ready to leave at about 6:30.
I'm not sure that I'd hangout with Iza again. She seems a little out there and we didn't really mesh well. She doesn't seem to have a problem disagreeing with you during conversation and isn't very relatable. It was still nice to have someone to go with.
We took the one to FDR and then she decided that she wanted to shop on the Champs-Elysées instead of going straight to the theater. We went into a store and she asked a saleswoman to find a coat for her in her size. We waited around as the saleswoman looked in the stock room for a good 20 minutes. We finally decided to leave before we were late for the concert. She had data on her phone so she used google to navigate to the theater. Kate and some of the other students were outside. We got our tickets and went in.
The theater is beautiful! It's super fancy. The inside has a giant glass dome that's in a flower pattern. Around the bottom of the dome are friezes of Greek gods and goddess of the arts frolicking in green pastures. On the stage there was a huge golden door that divided the stage that could be let up if an orchestra or some other large production was being put on. We were on the first level above the floor. It's a surprisingly small theater, but we had a great view. We were right in the front row.
The concert was amazing. Bach's Sonate BWV 1016 went by and didn't really make an impression on me. However, it was enough to put Iza to sleep in the seat next to me. I really enjoyed watching the musicians. The pianist, Yulianna Avdeeva, was so fun to watch. She made silly faces that went along with the feel of the song; happy faces for lighthearted parts and a scowl for darker parts. She took my attention away from Julia Fischer entirely! Prokofiev's Sonate number 1 op. 80 was amazing. It was so spooky. It felt like watching someone go through a haunted house. Julia Fischer played so passionately that she broke two strings on her bow! I really like her plucking of the strings.
Then we had intermission. I found my way to a bathroom downstairs. I got confused because it was labeled "librarie pour dames". The sign on the door said "toilette" with the word "dames" underneath. The door was concave, and once opened, revealed a small sink area and two private stalls on either side. I opened to door to find an older lady come out without washing her hands. I almost got locked in the bathroom, and managed to escape and go back to my seat.
After the intermission, Brahms Scherzo en do miner extrait de la Sonate F-A-E was played. The final song was Brahms Sonate number three op. 108. I've learned a lot about concert life from last night. After each song the musicians get up, bow, and then walk off stage. After a few seconds they reappear and play the next song. The audience never stops clapping until the next song begins. After the final song was played the audience clapped as they walked off stage. They came back out to bow again then went back stage. The second time they came out they were given flowers. They went backstage again. Before they reappeared for the third time the audience began to clap in unison. It was such an amazing phenomena! They came back out and played a short song and then went backstage again. More clapping lead to them coming out again. They then went backstage. On their second appearance they played another short song. After the second encore the lights came up and we all filed out. I had a fantastic evening.
Today started off being a real bummer. It's gray/raining today, and I had a lot of work to do. I started off studying for French, but I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. I just don't feel like I'm learning. Then I consulted the syllabus and found out that we have a quiz on Tuesday! We haven't managed to do anything since our last quiz and now we're having a quiz again! I emailed my professor to see what was going on and what I should be studying for. She confirmed that we have a quiz Tuesday, but her email was otherwise very vague. I'm freaking out.
I then moved onto finishing my French composition. It's a conversation between Jimmy, Elizabeth, and me about our future travel plans using le futur. Elizabeth is going to Mexico with her boyfriend and Jimmy is going to Spain and I'm joining him. I'm going to Morocco after we visit Spain. All very fascinating and staged.
Next up was my Invalides project. I reworked a lot of it and I feel like it still needs a lot of work. We are allowed 6-10 pages for the project which is supposed to include both text and pictures. I have six pages of text. There's no room for the rest of the project! I also found out that the project isn't due until Wednesday. I was under the impression that it was due on Tuesday. I know one day isn't that much, but I somehow feel very relieved to have an extra day especially since I have that stupid French quiz on Tuesday.
By this time it was already two (I took a 42 minute break to have popcorn and watch people's court). I was completely out of groceries so I got dressed and headed to the store. It was slightly sprinkling, and my mood reflected the gray day. I got two bags of chips, some cats' tongue cookies, some of the vanilla wafers I have come to love, a container of vanilla scented ice cream, cake for breakfast, and a loaf of bread. I was going to get nutella but I decided to wait until the end of the week.
I came home and reviewed the images for next week's histories class. I've been reading a week ahead because my class is behind schedule, and it'll be nice not to have to read right after holiday; I guess I'm reading for three weeks from now. I then started reading Horne chapter 14 for histories. It took me half an hour and I barely read a few pages. Then I went to pop sans makeup and wearing leggings.
I got to school and checked the mail. I had a yellow slip! My package from Jimmy had arrived after being sent a week and a half ago. I was so excited that I ripped the box open right then and there in front of the peering eyes of my classmates. It was the best package ever! Jimmy sent me: his copy of the Phantom Tollbooth, a small jar of nutella, a small jar of jif peanut butter, two bags of sour gummy worms, homemade brownies, the minion hat he bought for me in San Francisco over the summer, two family sized bags of puffy cheetos, two king sized reese peanut butter cups, and two king sized snickers. The other kids were so jealous, and I had no problem putting the huge box on a desk during class for the whole room to see.
My pop class spent the day studying Serge Gainsbourg. You can youtube him on your own time, but I'll give you a few first impressions. 1.) rape 2.) predator 3) totally shocked 4) simulated sex during a song 5) oh sweet Lord what am I listening to/seeing 6) lemon incest…a song about incest with his 12 year old daughter. I'm traumatized.
After class I came home to devour my brownies and finish reading Horne. I decided to put away the items from the package and rejoice over them one more time. I hadn't noticed that Jimmy had put an inscription on the front page of the book. There was also the film strip from the rave we went to together. The best part was a card from Elizabeth! I hadn't even noticed it when I had pulled the book out of the box! I started crying the second I realized that it was from her. I have the greatest friends in the world. Getting the package made me realize how loved I am, and how lucky I am to have such great friends. Why am I spending so much time being stressed out and worried. I have everything I need in life.
I managed to finish reading Horne with just enough time to take my shower and quickly paint my nails before skyping with my mom. It was so nice talking to her! Ms. Connie even stopped by to say hi! It was so great seeing her.
Now it's time to go to bed. Life is going to be very busy tomorrow.
